I found some great recipe swaps on CNN.com today. Dietitian and author Colleen Doyle illustrates just how many calories and fat grams you can save by making a simple switch from oil in packaged cake and brownie mixes to applesauce, mashed banana or canned pumpkin. One recipe of brownies ditched 900 calories and 100 grams of fat just by using applesauce. Other healthy swaps:
- Use evaporated milk instead of cream for soups and sauces. - Look for meats with ‘loin’ or ‘round’ in the name for the leaner cuts. - Buy ground meats that area at least 90% fat free.
Check out the article and video for more ideas.
As both a dietitian and dessert lover, I highly recommend the applesauce swap in cake and brownie mixes. The end product is much more moist than using oil. I’ve actually had people think that the cakes were homemade because they were so moist! Bonus! I recommend using the unsweetened applesauce, otherwise the dish can taste a little too sweet.
See, you really can have your cake and eat it too!
