I’d been pondering what I wanted to blog about all week, but unfortunately my mind was distracted with preparations for a week long business trip. As I was packing, it hit me...travel can be such a struggle for the health conscious. How can you eat healthy while sitting in airports & on planes?
I’ll tell you a secret, all dietitians travel with food. I think it’s something genetic. We don’t want to be stuck deciding between the overpriced greasy pizza or the king sized candy bar for a meal. If you look in my suitcase you’ll find high fiber granola bars and small bags of fruit & nut trail mix (I’m partial to the ones that include a few chocolate chips). I use these as snacks in the airport and my hotel or as “fill ins” if I’m traveling over a meal time.
The key to eating healthy on the road is planning ahead. A few minutes spent planning can save you from the $5 candy bar calling your name from the mini bar. Here are a few things that I’ve relied on over the years: - Granola bars (look for low fat and high fiber)
- Dried fruit
- Nuts
- 100 calorie bag snacks
- 100 calorie bags of microwave popcorn (if you room has a micro)
- Sugar free packets of hot chocolate (for rooms with a coffee maker)
- Small zip bags of almost anything (crackers, cheese, grapes, pretzels, cereal, veggies…)
- Bottle of water…. Don’t leave home without it!
Get creative, plan ahead & let me know what you come up with. I’m always looking for new ideas! - ReneeLabels: Health, healthy eating, Renee

thanks for the tips -- i have a lot of business trips coming up in the upcoming weeks -- and feel better knowing i can be prepared to face the fast food choices at most airport!
