Michael Bolton sings “how can we be lovers if we can’t be friends?” I sing this to my food all the time. Michael sings better! You have to be nice to yourself to diet successfully and to maintain that loss. Brian Wansink, Ph.D., author of Mindless Eating, calls it “ mindful wellness”. Jane E. Brody calls it “ controlled indulgence”. All three of us think depriving yourself leads to overindulgence at the first opportunity! In the past I would've called this a radical idea…lose the weight slowly with a long term plan, learning how to eat healthy and keep the weight off. Reward yourself with a small taste of something you like every day. Enjoy the feeling of liking yourself and try to maintain it. This is probably just called normal ( by some), if you can get there. There really is nothing “new” about losing weight, just new ways to approach it. In the past I tried to read books and figure out my blood type or true body shape. The only thing I learned was that a free radical is not an old hippy who just got out of jail. I was shocked! Today I’m just trying to be mindful, but not mean to myself about what I eat. The rest of you should feel free to indulge me. Just not with food! Thanks! - Nancy
