Open Standards
Sensei is a big believer in open standards and fully endorses use of open source tools, standards and practices. Google is making great strides in the mobile community by starting the Open HandSet Alliance (OHA). It’s even better to see carriers jumping on the bandwagon to support this new OS. Carriers have long been supporters of closed systems where most of the control lies internal to their own processes and mechanisms. Kudos to Sprint for pushing the envelope even further and joining the alliance! Click here to read more.

While all of this movement is good for the consumer and the community at large, there are still many issues with standardization in the mobile ecosystem. Manufacturers each have their own interpretation of “industry standards”, carriers support standards in different ways, and each network provides its own rules for usage and access.

Today, in Boston, this approach was challenged by many of the thought leaders in the mobile space. A quote from the report is particularly powerful to me. Jack Dziak, senior vice president of corporate strategy at Sprint Nextel said:

“Open source is a truly powerful development opportunity, and we will have to embrace it wholeheartedly, It's an opportunity to create a new economy and open the door to new growth for us and the industry."
