Earlier this year the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) released their latest restaurant report on the typical Chinese restaurant.
Many people mistakenly think Chinese restaurants are healthier because many dishes are stir-fried and contain more vegetables than the typical restaurant or take out meal. Not so according to the article. Not only are the calories quite high (due to oils and sauces), but the sodium content is pretty outrageous too!
This doesn’t mean you have to completely avoid your favorite Chinese take out place in order to eat healthy. It just means you’ll have to pay more attention to what and how you order. Here are some tips to remember: - Order dishes that are heavy on the vegetables.
- Ask for steamed dishes.
- Get your sauce on the side, this bypasses much of the oil and helps control the salt content.
- Choose dishes without batter or breading.
- Brown rice all the way (more nutrients and fiber!).
- Remember your doggy bag. There’s usually food to spare at most restaurants. Save half (or more) for the next day. Just think, another day you won’t have to cook!
